The Crafty Canary

Our story

Why a
canary?

A small brewery with a bird on the can, a pickaxe on its shoulder and a pint in its hand. Here is how that happened.

The Crafty Canary mark: a yellow canary in a miner's helmet, carrying a pickaxe and a pint

The name

Borrowed from the pit

The Afan Valley was coal country. Miners carried canaries underground as an early warning: the bird noticed trouble before anyone else did.

Our canary is off shift. Helmet still on, pickaxe over one shoulder, pint in the other hand. It is a nod to the valley's working past and a reminder that a good beer is usually earned.

How we work

Brewed for the outdoors

  1. 01

    Brew close to home

Everything is brewed on site in Cwmafan and sold a few steps away. Short distances, fresh beer.

  2. 02

    Fewer, better

A focused range, done properly, rather than a new can every week.

  3. 03

    Name it after somewhere real

Every beer is a trail you can ride. Go and find it, then come back for a can.

  4. 04

    Back Welsh beer

The shop stocks brewers from right across Wales alongside our own. Good neighbours make good beer.

The brewery

Brewery at the back. Bottle shop at the front.

At 7 High Street the beer is brewed, canned and sold under one roof. Pop in for the core range, a mixed case or something from one of the other Welsh brewers on the shelves.
