Augustiner Dunkel Export
PRODUCT DETAILS
Augustiner Dunkel Export is a traditional Bavarian dark lager brewed in Munich by Augustiner-Bräu, one of Germany's oldest and most respected breweries. Bottled at 5.6% ABV, this dunkel is a classic example of the Munich dark lager style, offering a malt-driven character quite different from the pale lagers most drinkers associate with German beer.
Augustiner-Bräu traces its history back to 1328, when Augustinian monks began brewing beer in a monastery near Munich Cathedral. The brewery operated within the monastery for nearly five hundred years before being privatised in 1817 and moving to premises on Neuhauser Strasse, with brewer Anton Wagner taking over the business in 1829. It remains Munich's oldest independent brewery and one of the few still using traditional wooden casks for some of its beer, a detail that continues to define its reputation among Bavarian brewers.
Dunkel Export pours a deep chestnut brown with ruby highlights and a creamy, off-white head. The aroma leans on roasted malt, caramel and fresh bread crust, with light touches of chocolate and nuts alongside the noble hops used in the brew. On the palate, smooth caramel malt and gentle roasted notes give the beer a warming richness, with soft hints of chocolate and toasted bread coming through before a clean, dry finish. The hop bitterness is restrained, keeping the balance firmly on the malt side, which is typical of the dunkel style and distinguishes it from more heavily hopped dark ales.
As a Munich dunkel, this beer suits hearty, savoury food. It pairs well with roast meats, sausages and other traditional German dishes, as well as with strong cheeses and rich stews, where its malt character can stand up to the food rather than being overwhelmed by it. Served at a cool cellar temperature rather than ice cold, the beer's caramel and bready notes come through more clearly, which is generally how dunkels are recommended to be enjoyed in Bavaria itself.
Augustiner Dunkel Export is a good option for anyone wanting to explore beyond the more familiar Munich helles style, offering a genuine taste of the darker side of Bavarian brewing from a brewery with an unbroken history stretching back nearly seven centuries. At 5.6% ABV, it has enough body and flavour to be a considered choice rather than a session beer, while remaining approachable for drinkers new to the dunkel style.
