Penderyn whisky is produced by the Welsh Whisky Company, founded in 1998 by a group of friends in a Hirwaun pub who set out to bring whisky distilling back to Wales for the first time in over a century. The first spirit ran from the stills at the Penderyn distillery in the Brecon Beacons National Park in September 2000, with the site chosen for its own supply of fresh natural spring water. Penderyn uses a single distinctive copper pot still, a method that differs from the double distillation typically used in Scotch whisky production and gives the resulting spirit its own character.

Each whisky in this selection shows a different side of Penderyn's range. The Madeira, matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in Madeira wine casks, offers cream toffee, rich fruit and raisin notes with a crisp, rounded palate. The Sherrywood, finished in former sherry casks, brings dark fruit and rich toffee aromas, with apple and hazelnut hints and a sweet, sultana laced finish. The Peated expression introduces a gentler, medium peaty smokiness, with aromatic smoke and vanilla on the nose, green apple underneath, and a lingering smoky finish on the palate. All three are non chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV.

This set is best enjoyed as a guided tasting, working through the three miniatures in turn from lightest to most heavily peated, using a tulip shaped nosing glass for each so their individual aromas can be properly appreciated. It works well shared between two or three people at a tasting evening, or as an introduction for someone new to Welsh whisky who wants to understand the range Penderyn produces before choosing a favourite to buy in full size.
