Penderyn whisky is produced by the Welsh Whisky Company, founded in 1998 when a group of friends in a Hirwaun pub decided to re-establish whisky distilling in Wales after a gap of more than a century. The first spirit was produced at the Penderyn distillery, in the Brecon Beacons National Park, in September 2000, using water from the site's own natural spring, and Penderyn whiskies are distilled using a single distinctive copper pot still rather than the double distillation more commonly used in Scotch whisky production.

The Madeira expression included in this set is matured in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in casks that previously held Madeira wine, giving the whisky its light golden colour and much of its character. On the nose it offers cream toffee, rich fruit and raisins, while the palate is crisp and finely rounded, balancing sweetness against an appetising dryness, with tropical fruit and vanilla notes carrying through to a long, lingering finish with a touch of spice. It is bottled without chill filtration, so it retains more of its natural texture and colour.

The included nosing glass is designed with a tapered, tulip shaped bowl, which concentrates the whisky's aroma at the rim and makes it easier to appreciate the toffee and fruit notes on the nose before tasting. Using the two miniatures with the glass allows for a proper side by side tasting, perhaps once neat and once with a small amount of water added, to see how the whisky's character changes.
