Bragdy Conwy - West Coast California
PRODUCT DETAILS
West Coast California is a citrus blonde ale from Conwy Brewery, brewed in Llysfaen, North Wales, and finished with American hops to give it a grapefruit-led character at around 4.7% ABV. The name nods directly to the American hop varieties used, and to the West Coast brewing tradition that popularised big, citrusy hop character in pale beers, even though the beer itself is brewed entirely in North Wales rather than California.
The brewery behind it, Conwy Brewery, was founded in 2003 by Gwynne Thomas and his wife Adele, growing from home brewing experiments in Llandudno into the first new brewery to open in North Wales in over a hundred years. The business expanded steadily, moving to larger premises in Llysfaen in 2013 that now include the brewery's own taproom, Mash. Conwy Brewery naturally conditions most of its cask and bottled beers, allowing a secondary fermentation to take place in the vessel itself, which supports natural carbonation and reduces the need for heavy filtration.
Blonde ales as a style are pale, light bodied beers designed to be approachable, typically lower in bitterness than a pale ale or IPA and often used by brewers as a showcase for a particular hop character without the more assertive bitterness of hoppier styles. In West Coast California, that showcase is American hops, which tend to bring bright citrus and sometimes tropical fruit notes, in this case leaning towards grapefruit. Expect a pale golden colour, a light to medium body, and a hop aroma that is more about fruit and freshness than resinous bitterness.
This beer is well suited to serving lightly chilled in a straight glass, which allows its citrus hop aroma to come through. Its bright, grapefruit-forward character makes it a good match for lighter food: grilled fish, seafood, salads with a citrus dressing, or Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes where the beer's fruitiness can stand alongside chilli heat. It also works well on a warm day as a refreshing beer on its own, without needing food to accompany it.
For drinkers who enjoy the citrus-forward character associated with American craft beer but want something locally brewed, West Coast California offers that style filtered through a Welsh brewery's naturally conditioned approach. It is a beer that borrows an American accent while remaining, in production and provenance, thoroughly rooted in North Wales.
