PRODUCT DETAILS

Penhydd Stout is a 4.7% stout from Crafty Canary, the independent brewery and bottle shop based on the High Street in Cwmavon, in the Afan Valley near Port Talbot, South Wales. It is one of the six beers in Crafty Canary's core range, brewed on site alongside Skyline Lager, Y Wal Golden Ale, Blade IPA and the rest of the shop's own beers.

Crafty Canary operates as both a working brewery and a bottle shop, brewing its own beer while also stocking a wider selection from other producers around Wales. Cwmavon lies right at the entrance to Afan Forest Park, home to the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre and one of the most respected network of mountain bike trails in Wales. Penhydd takes its name from the Penhydd trail through the forest, a route often described as an approachable introduction to the area's red graded riding before tackling longer trails such as The Wall or White's Level, and it is one of several Crafty Canary beers that echo the names of the trails on the brewery's doorstep.

As a stout, Penhydd is built around dark roasted malts, giving it the deep brown to near black colour and creamy tan head typical of the style. Expect the characteristic roasted grain character common to stouts generally, often showing through as notes of coffee and dark chocolate, with a smooth, medium body and a moderately dry finish. At 4.7% ABV it sits at a comfortable, sessionable strength for a dark beer, offering the depth of flavour associated with stouts without tipping into the heavier territory of an imperial stout.

Stout is one of the more food friendly beer styles, and Penhydd suits hearty, savoury dishes well, from a traditional beef stew to a plate of oysters, a classic and often recommended pairing for roasted, malty dark beers. It also works well alongside grilled or barbecued meat, strong cheddar, or simply on its own at the end of a cold day, ideally served a little above fridge temperature to let its roasted character come through.

Named after one of the more accessible trails in Afan Forest Park, Penhydd Stout is a solid, warming beer that reflects Crafty Canary's identity as a small, locally rooted Welsh brewery. For drinkers exploring the wider Crafty Canary range, it is a dependable dark beer that sits comfortably alongside the lighter lager and golden ale in the same core lineup.
