PRODUCT DETAILS

Hive Mind Mead and Brew Co Traditional Mead is a honey wine made in the Welsh borders using nothing more than honey, water, and yeast. Traditional mead of this kind, sometimes called sack mead when made at higher strength, is one of the oldest fermented drinks known, predating both beer and wine, and this bottle from Hive Mind is a modern, small-batch take on that ancient style. At 14.5% ABV it sits closer in strength to a fortified wine than to beer, and it is designed to be sipped and savoured rather than drunk by the pint.

Hive Mind Mead and Brew Co began life as Wye Valley Meadery, founded in 2018 by brothers Matt and Kit Newell. The business is based in the Wye Valley on the Welsh borders and centres on beekeeping as much as brewing, with the company caring for more than 180 hives across over 20 sites in the surrounding countryside. Rather than buying in honey, Hive Mind ferments its meads from its own harvest, which gives it close control over the raw material behind every bottle. The Traditional Mead is made entirely from Wye Valley honey, without the wine base or added sugar that some cheaper commercial meads rely on, and this has helped the range pick up recognition including a 3 star Great Taste Award and the Golden Fork Award for Wales in 2023.

In character, Traditional Mead is medium sweet with a pronounced floral, blossom honey aroma, backed by gentle heather notes typical of Welsh borders honey. The palate carries a soft sweetness that rolls into a lightly acidic, lemony finish, with the alcohol warmth of a 14.5% ABV drink evident but not overpowering. Being a still, honey-forward wine rather than a carbonated mead, it has a smooth, wine-like body, and the finish is long, warm, and distinctly honeyed rather than sharp or overly cloying.

Traditional mead is best served chilled or at cool room temperature, much as you would serve a dessert or fortified wine, in a small wine glass to concentrate the aroma. It pairs naturally with strong or blue cheeses, cured meats, dark chocolate, and fruit-based puddings, and also works well as a digestif on its own after a meal. Because of its sweetness and strength, smaller measures go further than a standard wine pour, making it a good option for slow drinking rather than casual refreshment.

For drinkers curious about mead beyond the novelty bottles often found on supermarket shelves, Hive Mind Traditional Mead offers a genuine, honey-only example of the style from a small family producer with real beekeeping credentials behind it. It reflects the Wye Valley landscape it comes from as directly as any drink can, built from the honey of bees kept and tended by the people who bottle it.
