Gwynt y Ddraig, Orchard Gold Cider
PRODUCT DETAILS
Gwynt y Ddraig Orchard Gold Cider is a 4.9% ABV traditional Welsh cider produced by Gwynt y Ddraig, a cider maker based in Llantwit Fardre, South Wales. Made using a traditional oak-matured farmhouse method, Orchard Gold is positioned as a lighter, more sessionable option within the Gwynt y Ddraig range, sitting alongside the brand's stronger, award-winning ciders such as Gold Medal and Black Dragon.
Gwynt y Ddraig, meaning "wind of the dragon" in Welsh, has grown into one of Wales's best known cider producers, working with orchards across South Wales to source the apples used across its range. The company has built its reputation on traditional cider-making techniques, including oak maturation, and first gained wider recognition when it became the first Welsh cider producer to win a CAMRA Gold Medal in 2004. Orchard Gold forms part of the wider Gwynt y Ddraig range and reflects the same traditional farmhouse approach used across the brand's other ciders, produced at a lower ABV for more casual drinking.
Orchard Gold is a medium cider with a golden to medium amber colour and a refreshing apple aroma. The flavour is smooth and balanced, with a fresh, crisp sharpness rather than the heavier tannin structure found in some of Gwynt y Ddraig's stronger ciders, though a noticeable tannin kick still comes through, along with a hint of sharpness on the finish. Being oak matured in the traditional farmhouse style gives it more depth than a simple filtered commercial cider, while its lower 4.9% ABV keeps it easier drinking. It is also suitable for vegetarians, vegans and those following a coeliac diet.
Serve Orchard Gold well chilled in a straight glass to enjoy its colour and apple aroma. Its balanced, crisp character makes it a versatile food pairing option, working well with pork dishes, Cheddar and other traditional British cheeses, or simply on its own as a refreshing drink in warmer weather. Its more moderate strength compared to other Gwynt y Ddraig ciders makes it a reasonable choice for sessions where a lighter drink is preferred.
For those wanting a genuine taste of Welsh cider tradition without the higher strength of some farmhouse ciders, Gwynt y Ddraig Orchard Gold offers an accessible, well balanced option from an established South Wales producer. It carries the same oak-matured, traditional production values as the rest of the Gwynt y Ddraig range, in a lighter, more everyday format.
