Penderyn - Siddiqui Brown Rum
PRODUCT DETAILS
Penderyn Siddiqui Brown Rum is a rum produced at Penderyn Distillery in Wales in partnership with Siddiqui Rums, a brand originally established in California. Bottled at 40% ABV, it is the aged version of the pair's Siddiqui rum, matured in American oak casks, and is described by its makers as a spirit that sips like a whisky and parties like a rum.
Penderyn Distillery, based in the Brecon Beacons National Park, was established by the Welsh Whisky Company in 1998, with the first spirit produced there in September 2000. Best known for its single malt Welsh whisky made using a distinctive single copper pot still, the distillery has since extended its production to other spirits, including this rum made under licence for Siddiqui Rums. The Siddiqui name has an unusual history rooted in the oil industry of the Middle East, where alcohol import bans in the early 1950s led expatriate oil workers to build homemade stills and distil their own spirit in secret, adopting the Arabic word Siddiqui, meaning my friend, as its name.
Ageing in American oak gives Siddiqui Brown Rum a character that sits between traditional rum and whisky. It carries a smoky, oaky note more commonly associated with whisky maturation, rounded off with the shorter, lighter finish typical of a well made rum rather than the longer, heavier finish of an aged Scotch or Welsh whisky. This makes it a distinctive spirit within the rum category, reflecting both its Caribbean style base spirit and its Welsh whisky adjacent maturation.
Siddiqui Brown Rum can be enjoyed neat or on ice to appreciate its oak and whisky like notes, and its structure also makes it a good candidate for spirit forward cocktails such as an Old Fashioned or a rum based Manhattan, where its oak character can stand up to other strong flavours. It also works well in a simple rum and ginger ale, where the oak and light smoke come through alongside the spice of the ginger.
For drinkers curious about the overlap between rum and whisky, or fans of Penderyn's distilling work looking to try something outside the distillery's core single malt range, Siddiqui Brown Rum offers a genuinely different style of spirit with an unusual and well documented history behind its name.
