Tregroes, Box Butter Toffee Waffles, 260g
PRODUCT DETAILS
Tregroes Butter Toffee Waffles, sold here in a 260g box, are a traditional Welsh sweet biscuit made up of two thin waffle discs sandwiched together with a soft butter toffee filling. Made by Tregroes Waffles in the Teifi Valley in south-west Wales, they are one of the best known regional sweet biscuits produced in Wales, sold in supermarkets and independent shops across the UK as well as internationally.
Tregroes Waffles began in 1983 in the small village of Tregroes, when founder Kees Huysmans baked a batch of waffles at home and took them, along with his waffle iron, to sell from a market stall at Henllan Railway on Bonfire Night. That first outing proved successful enough to turn into a regular business, and over the following decades Tregroes grew from a market stall operation into a proper bakery, while remaining a small, family run company based in the Teifi Valley. The business now produces waffles at a considerably larger scale, supplying most of the leading UK supermarkets as well as independent food shops, while still being known primarily as a Welsh, family owned producer rather than a large industrial bakery.
The waffles themselves are made from two thin, crisp wafer-style biscuit discs, patterned with the traditional shallow waffle grid, sandwiched around a soft, chewy butter toffee filling. The contrast between the crisp outer discs and the soft, sticky toffee centre is the defining feature of the product, giving it a texture somewhere between a biscuit and a soft caramel sweet. The flavour is straightforwardly buttery and toffee-like, without additional flavourings competing for attention, which has helped keep the recipe largely unchanged since the company's early days. The 260g box typically contains a number of individually wrapped or boxed waffles, suited to sharing or to keeping for a few days without losing freshness.
These waffles are designed to be eaten as a sweet snack on their own, usually alongside a cup of tea or coffee, rather than as part of a cooked dish. Their sturdy, biscuit-like structure means they travel well, making them a practical choice for lunchboxes, packed snacks or as a small gift of Welsh produce. Because the filling is soft rather than liquid, they hold together well at room temperature, though like most toffee-filled biscuits they can soften further in warm conditions.
As one of the longest established Welsh sweet biscuit brands, Tregroes Butter Toffee Waffles offer a straightforward, well made treat with a genuine regional history behind it. The 260g box format makes it an easy addition to a bakery or confectionery order for anyone looking for a traditional Welsh sweet snack alongside the rest of their shop.
