PRODUCT DETAILS

Y Wal Golden Ale is a 4.5% golden ale from Crafty Canary, the independent brewery and bottle shop on the High Street in Cwmavon, in the Afan Valley near Port Talbot. Its name is simply Welsh for "The Wall", and it forms part of the core range of beers that Crafty Canary brews on site alongside Skyline Lager, Penhydd Stout, Blade IPA and the rest of the shop's own beers.

Crafty Canary is both a brewery and a bottle shop, brewing its own beer while also selling a wider range of beers from producers across Wales. Cwmavon sits at the foot of the Afan Valley, next to Afan Forest Park and the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre, one of Wales's best known mountain bike trail networks. The Wall is one of the area's signature red graded trails, an 18.7 kilometre route known for having one of the best descents of any trail in the forest, and Y Wal joins several other beers in the Crafty Canary range that take their names from the trails running through the woods around the brewery.

As a golden ale, Y Wal is built around pale malt and a clean, pale gold to amber colour, generally lighter in body and colour than a traditional bitter. Golden ales typically balance modest malt sweetness with a more assertive hop character than older English ale styles, often showing citrus or floral hop notes, and finishing crisp and refreshing rather than heavy. At 4.5% ABV it sits at a classic, easy drinking strength for the style, well suited to being served cool rather than at cellar temperature.

Golden ale is a versatile style at the table, working well with lighter dishes than a stout or dark ale would suit, such as grilled chicken, fish, or a summer salad, as well as classic pub food like a ploughman's lunch. Its refreshing character and moderate strength also make it a sensible choice for drinking on its own, particularly outdoors or after a day spent walking or riding in the Afan Valley itself.

Taking its name from one of the standout trails on Crafty Canary's doorstep, Y Wal Golden Ale is an easy drinking, approachable beer that fits well within the brewery's small, locally focused range. It is a good option for drinkers who prefer a lighter, hop forward ale over the darker or stronger beers in the Crafty Canary lineup.
