Crafty Canary - Blue Scar 3.4%
PRODUCT DETAILS
Blue Scar is a 3.4% session ale from Crafty Canary, the independent brewery and bottle shop based on the High Street in Cwmavon, in the Afan Valley near Port Talbot. It is the lightest beer in Crafty Canary's core range, sitting alongside Skyline Lager, Penhydd Stout, Y Wal Golden Ale, Blade IPA and Whites Ruby as one of the shop's own house beers.
Crafty Canary brews its own beer on site while also stocking a broader range of beers from other Welsh producers, making it both a working brewery and a destination bottle shop. Cwmavon sits at the entrance to Afan Forest Park, home to the Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre and a well regarded network of mountain bike trails. Blue Scar shares its name with the Blue Scar trail, which shares its opening climb out of the visitor centre with the Penhydd trail before splitting off, and the name has an older resonance in the valley too, having also been the title of a 1949 film shot partly in the area, focused on a Welsh mining community. Whatever the exact inspiration, it is another of several Crafty Canary beers named after the trails and landscape around the brewery.
At 3.4% ABV, Blue Scar is brewed as a session strength beer, meaning it is designed for lighter, more relaxed drinking rather than for sipping in small measures. Expect a lighter body and more restrained malt character than the brewery's stronger beers, with a clean, moderate bitterness and an easy drinking, refreshing finish typical of beers brewed at this lower strength. It is the kind of beer built to be enjoyed over the course of an evening rather than as an occasional treat.
Lighter, session strength beers like Blue Scar pair well with everyday food rather than rich or heavy dishes, working nicely alongside a pub lunch, a light pasta dish, or simple grilled food. Served cool, it also stands well on its own, making it a sensible choice after a day spent out on the trails that inspired its name, or simply as an easy going option to keep on hand.
As the most sessionable beer in the Crafty Canary range, Blue Scar reflects the practical, unfussy approach the brewery takes to its core lineup. It is a straightforward, lower strength option for drinkers who want the character of a proper ale without committing to a stronger beer.
