Halve Maan Straffe Hendrik Tripel
PRODUCT DETAILS
Halve Maan Straffe Hendrik Tripel is a Belgian tripel ale at 9% ABV, brewed by Brouwerij De Halve Maan in the centre of Bruges. It is the original beer in the brewery's Straffe Hendrik range, named after Henry the First and produced using a blend of six speciality malts alongside Saaz and Styrian hops to create a well balanced, powerful strong ale in the classic Belgian tripel tradition.
Brouwerij De Halve Maan is one of the last remaining family breweries in Bruges city centre, with beer having been brewed on its current site for roughly five hundred years. The Maes family took over the brewery in 1856 and it has remained under family ownership for six generations, now led by Xavier Vanneste. In 2016 the brewery completed a 3.3 kilometre underground pipeline connecting it to a bottling plant outside the city, built to avoid heavy delivery traffic through Bruges's narrow medieval streets, a project partly crowdfunded by the public in exchange for free beer.
Straffe Hendrik Tripel pours a deep gold colour with a dense white head, and its spicy aroma carries notes of black pepper, coriander and ginger alongside a hint of orange. On the palate it opens with fruity citrus, banana and raisin character, sweetened by Belgian candied sugar and held together by bready malt, before spicy pepper and coriander notes and a firm but well balanced bitterness from Saaz and Styrian hops bring the beer to a clean finish. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich, with a creamy character balanced against the beer's bitterness, and at 9% ABV it carries genuine strength while remaining well integrated rather than harsh.
Serve Straffe Hendrik Tripel in a tulip glass or other wide-bowled beer glass, poured to build a good head, and lightly chilled rather than ice cold to let its spice and fruit character show through. Its bold, spiced profile suits rich food pairings such as roast chicken, strong cheeses or Belgian dishes like carbonnade, and it also works well as a considered beer to drink on its own, given its strength and complexity.
As the founding beer in the Straffe Hendrik range, Tripel represents Brouwerij De Halve Maan's take on the classic Belgian strong ale style, brewed within a family-run Bruges brewery with roots stretching back generations. It remains a well regarded example of the tripel category for drinkers looking for a genuine, traditionally brewed Belgian strong ale.
