Tiny Rebel- Cali
PRODUCT DETAILS
Cali is an American Pale Ale from Tiny Rebel Brewing Co, brewed at 4.6% ABV using pale and wheat malt alongside Ekuanot, Mosaic and Citra hops. Named for the West Coast American beer scene that inspired it, Cali is designed as a juicy, approachable pale ale that leans on modern American hop varieties for its fruit driven character, rather than on strong bitterness. It sits within Tiny Rebel's core range as one of the brewery's more sessionable, everyday drinking beers.
Tiny Rebel Brewing Co was founded in 2012 in Newport, South Wales, by brothers-in-law Bradley Cummings and Gareth Williams, who began brewing without a formal business plan and built their early identity around the graffiti and street art of their home city. What started as home brewing in a garage grew into a commercial brewery based in the Maesglas area of Newport, before the company later opened a larger, purpose built brewery and visitor centre in Rogerstone. Tiny Rebel became one of the most recognised names in Welsh craft beer, winning Champion Beer of Britain in 2015 for its Cwtch Welsh Red Ale and Brewery Business of the Year in 2016, and the brewery has continued to expand its range of pale ales, IPAs and other styles from that base.
In the glass, Cali is a pale, golden beer with a moderate body typical of the American Pale Ale style. The wheat malt in the grain bill gives it a slightly softer, smoother mouthfeel than an all-barley pale ale, while the combination of Ekuanot, Mosaic and Citra hops brings tropical and pine flavours to the front, often described as having a relaxed mango character alongside more citrus and resinous notes. With an IBU in the low forties, the bitterness is present but restrained, keeping the beer balanced and easy to drink at 4.6% ABV. It is also brewed to be vegan friendly.
As a lighter, fruit forward pale ale, Cali suits food that can stand up to a bit of hop character without being overwhelmed by heavy bitterness. It pairs well with grilled or barbecued food, spicy dishes such as Thai or Mexican food, and lighter meals like salads or seafood, where the citrus and tropical notes can complement rather than clash with the other flavours. It also works as a straightforward drink on its own, served cold in a standard pint glass, particularly in warmer weather given its lighter body and moderate strength.
For drinkers familiar with Tiny Rebel's better known beers such as Cwtch or Clwb Tropica, Cali offers a lighter, more session focused alternative from the same Newport brewery. It is a dependable, widely available American Pale Ale from one of Wales's most established craft breweries, suited to regular drinking rather than occasional treat status.
